John Alatevie, A.K.A Byno Ayoni, a young reggae-dancehall musician with albinism was crowned the winner of TV3 Ghana’s musical reality show, Mentor season 12 on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
His win came as no surprise, as he became the favourite of many followers of the show and the judges alike, owing to his outstanding performances throughout the 13 weeks of the competition.
Byno took home a variety of prizes, including GHc15,000 in cash, a recording deal valued at GHc40,000, Radio and TV airtime worth GHc50,000 from TV3, GHc10,000 worth of insurance cover, and other rewards.
The immediate past president of the Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism, Mrs. Mawunyo Yakor-Dagbah, describes his victory as a bold statement and a confirmation of the capabilities of persons with albinism.
According to her, the win is a testament to the point they make that if persons with disabilities, including persons with albinism, are given the opportunity and the right support, they can excel in whatever field they choose, just like other members of society.
Mrs. Yakor-Dagbah who is an Auditor with the Ghana Audit Service and a member of the governing board of the National Council on Persons with Disability asserts that many persons with albinism have become timid due to the stigmatisation and discrimination they face and so, they are unable to pursue their dreams. She adds that only a few of them are able to force their way out.
She commends the chief and people of Aflao, including their Member of Parliament, Hon. Ablah Dzifa Gomashie for the massive support they offered to Byno. She believes that that played a big role in the young man’s success.
The Auditor who was one of the members of the albinism community who attended the finals of the event to cheer Byno to victory, calls for more of such love and support for persons with albinism and other persons with disabilities so that they are not left behind in any aspect of life.
Mrs. Mawunyo Yakor-Dagbah tells persons with albinism to be challenged by Byno’s exploit to move out of their shells.
She says if they don’t allow the negative treatments to weigh them down but rather challenge their inhibitions, they will be able to achieve anything at all they set out to do.
Mrs. Mawunyo Yakor-Dagbah was speaking in an exclusive interview with DisabilityNewsGH.com on the victory of Byno Ayoni.
