Emma Sallah, founder of the Anlo Special School in Keta and a dedicated advocate for children with intellectual disabilities, has been nominated for MTN Heroes of Change Season 7 in recognition of her selfless work.
Emma’s journey began in 2012 at the Autism Awareness Care Center in Kokomlemle, where she witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by children with autism, Down syndrome, and other intellectual disabilities. Moved by a deep sense of empathy and responsibility, Emma relocated to Keta after the passing of her mother and observed a critical gap in educational opportunities for children with disabilities in the region.
In October 2018, Emma founded the Anlo Special School, a day center providing a nurturing environment where children with intellectual disabilities can thrive, learn, and develop essential life skills. The school operates on donations, Emma’s personal savings, and proceeds from a community-based seashell art project, offering free snacks and lunch to alleviate the financial burden on families.
The school focuses on building a strong educational foundation, addressing not only intellectual needs but also the emotional and social development of its students. One notable success story is a young boy who initially struggled to communicate but has since learned to speak and interact with others, prompting a local chief to grant Emma land for a permanent school building.
Emma’s students have also participated in national competitions for children with disabilities, fostering confidence and social connections. In addition to her work at the school, Emma has been involved in community outreach programmes, including organising health screening events providing free medication and health resources, as well as mosquito repellents for malaria prevention.
Despite the school’s significant impact, Emma faces ongoing challenges, including funding limitations and accessibility issues. The school currently operates out of Emma’s porch, limiting its potential for growth, and Emma encounters societal stigma related to working with children with disabilities.
These challenges notwithstanding, Emma remains focused on her mission to provide education, support, and hope for children who would otherwise be left behind.
“I face many obstacles, but my love for the children and my commitment to this cause keeps me going,” Emma says with determination.
Emma’s dedication exemplifies the spirit of the MTN Heroes of Change programme, which recognises individuals transforming their communities through service, compassion, and dedication.
