The National Vice President of the Ghana Blind Sports Association, Miss Ramatu Salifu is appealing to Ghanaians to patronize disability sports, just like they patronize the regular sports.

She says, that will not only encourage disabled athletes, but also signify acceptance by society.

In an interview with DisabilityNewsGH during the 2022 disability fun games at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, April 23, Miss Ramatu laments that Ghanaians do not patronize disability sports.

According to her, most often, it is only persons with disabilities who come out to watch their games, and this does not help the development of disability sports and the realization of their possible impact on society.

She explains that, one of the things disability sports do is show society the talents and capabilities of persons with disabilities.

Miss Ramatu Salifu notes that, in the case where disability sports are left for only persons with disabilities, it does not help the achievement of such a purpose. She, therefore, appeals to the public to show some love to persons with disabilities by attending their sporting events.

She further appeals to families of persons with disabilities not to discourage them from participating in sports, but rather motivate and support them to showcase their talents.

Miss Ramatu who is also a National Goal ball player, discloses that, disabled athletes do not often get the needed support of their families and communities.

According to her, while some are told that they cannot do sports because of their disabilities, others are mocked.

She observed that such situations do not help the development and growth of persons with disabilities. And so there is the need for a change of perception and attitudes by families and society in general.
