Former Member of Parliament for Krachi Nchumuru in the Oti Region of Ghana, Hon. John Ajisi has advised persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the country, including their leadership to be careful not to allow politicians to divide them.

The former law maker who is a disability rights advocate notes that, the disability movement can only achieve its objectives by fighting in unity.

Hon. John Ajisi made the comments at this year’s National Disability Day celebration in Accra on June 23, 2022, sponsored by Ghana Somubi Dwumadie.

While commending the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) for its efforts in championing the cause of persons with disabilities in the country, he also notes that, the organization at the local levels is not as strong as the national level; and calls for strengthening of the organization at the rural areas of the country.

He is worried that persons with disabilities are gradually allowing partisan politics to divide them, to extent that the District Assemblies common fund for PWDs is now shared on political lines.

“You realize that because of the vulnerability, there’s the tendency for politicians to use persons with disabilities. They divide the rank and file of the organization at the grass roots and tend to favour some groups of people on political lines. And so our organization will not be strong”, he states.

He admonishes that, “We should not allow politicians to divide us because of the few things they will give to us. Once we agree that we have a common interest and common aspirations, we need to come together as one people”.
