In recognition of their unwavering commitment to the welfare and empowerment of persons with disabilities, the disability community in the Ga West Municipality has presented special awards of honour to three key municipal leaders.
The awards were presented on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. John Desmond Sowah-Nai; the Member of Parliament (MP) for Amasaman, Hon. Sedem Afenyo; and the Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly, Hon. E. K. Mawuli Amuzu.
The delegation from the disability community comprised of the government-appointed Assembly Member with disability, Hon. Genevieve Ama Kujem and the Municipal chairman of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, Mr Widom Kofi Adifu.
The presentation was originally scheduled as part of the recent Father’s Day commemorations to celebrate the three leaders for their paternal care and leadership towards PWDs.
However, due to official scheduling conflicts, the gesture was rescheduled and delivered during Wednesday’s formal session.
Presenting the plaques of honour, Hon. Genevieve Ama Kujem commended the leadership trio for their deep empathy, accessible governance, and consistent backing of the disability movement in Ga West.
She noted that under their leadership, the municipality has registered significant progress in addressing issues affecting PWDs.
Hon. Genevieve also singled out a major milestone: a new initiative by the Ga West Municipal Assembly to collect comprehensive data on persons with disabilities across the municipality.
She emphasized that having an accurate, disaggregated database will allow the Assembly to properly plan, allocate resources equitably, and ensure no PWD in Ga West is left behind in local development.
Receiving the citation, the MCE, Hon. John Desmond Sowah-Nai, expressed deep emotional appreciation for the recognition, describing it as the most meaningful honour of his career.
The MCE made special mention of Hon. Genevieve’s indefatigable spirit and advocacy, noting that her accomplishments as a physically challenged female leader serve as a constant source of inspiration to him and the entire Assembly administration.
Reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment, Hon. Sowah-Nai pledged that together with the MP, Hon. Sedem Afenyo, and the Presiding Member, Hon. E. K. Mawuli Amuzu, they would redouble their efforts to promote disability rights.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that every person with a disability in Ga West enjoys their full rights, dignity, and equal opportunities like every other citizen”, the MCE said.
