The Governance for Inclusive Development Commission by the German Federal Ministry for Economic
Cooperation and Development, held a film screening programme in Accra on Tuesday, December 6,
2022, to mark this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, which was on December 3.

Some 35 people from the disability fraternity attended the screening, a film about disability activism and
governance entitled ‘Crip Camp’.

There was also a panel discussion on the issues in the film and other concerns of persons with
disabilities (PWDs) in the country, including the challenges with the disbursement of the District
Assemblies Common Fund for PWDs.

The persons with disabilities themselves observed that the lack of unity among them was affecting their
fight for inclusion and better living conditions.

The Greater Accra Regional Vice Chairperson of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled, Madam
Eugenia Kangni, in an interview with DisabilityNewsGH, attributed the situation to partisan politics.

She explained that some persons with disabilities allowed partisan politics to take the better of them,
and so they become either vocal about disability matters or go quiet, depending on which party is in
power.

She also noted that there was no brotherly love and care among them, resulting in people fighting for
their “selfish” interests very often.

She, therefore, called on persons with disabilities in the country to unite to be able to fight for their
well-being.
