Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has passionately called for a more inclusive society that embraces individuals with disabilities, drawing on his own experience as a wheelchair user.

Speaking at the inaugural Disability Conversation hosted by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation, Kufuor shared a powerful personal reflection. He acknowledged that a decade ago, he could never have envisioned needing a wheelchair.

“Look at me today,” he said. “Ten years ago, if someone had predicted that I would be in a wheelchair, they might have been called a false prophet. But this is my reality now. I am in a wheelchair, I cannot walk, and I rely on several strong men to help me move around”, he said.

Kufuor’s candid statement underscored his belief that disability can affect anyone, regardless of background or status. He emphasized the need for greater acceptance and integration of people with disabilities, highlighting the importance of embracing diversity and developing tolerance for all individuals.

“We cannot afford to leave any segment of our society behind,” he stated. “We must acknowledge our differences and challenges and strive to integrate everyone as a valued part of the human race.”

Kufuor also stressed the significance of the Disability Act in creating a society where individuals with disabilities feel safe, protected, and valued. His personal journey and advocacy serve as a powerful reminder of the need for a more inclusive and empathetic world.
