Minister Anomah-Kordieh, a visually impaired gospel musician has released a song about one of the assistive devices of the blind-the white cane.

The song entitled ‘My white cane’, is meant to educate the public on the use of the white cane and what it symbolizes.

The song talks about how motorists should identify and yield to white cane users, how the Police should assist users of the cane and how road contractors should create tactile pavements on pedestrian ways for the blind to aid their movement, among other calls.

It also educates the blind on the significance of the white cane and why they should not go out without one.

Minister Anomah-Kordieh told DisabilityNewsGH that he discovered from his own experience as a white cane user, that the Ghanaian public did not know anything about the white cane and, therefore, did not know how to relate to people who use it.

That, he said, moved him to come up with the song.

He is hoping that it would be adopted as a public education material by the Africa and World Blind Unions, and played all around the world.

Video of the song is expected to be out before the end of the year.

Since 1964, October 15 every year is celebrated as world white cane day.

The Theme for this year’s celebration is ‘A symbol of Independence and right’.

Apart from keeping the blind safe, the white cane is also a tool that blind people use to explore and navigate the environment.

For this reason, the emphasis of White Cane Safety Day has shifted over time away from safety, and toward independence and equality.

To emphasize the shift in focus from safety to independence, and to continue to use the white cane as a symbol, the blind community has chosen to refer to this day as White Cane Awareness Day.
