Forty-eight learners at the Salvation Army School for the Deaf in Swedru received specialised dental care and education on 26th March to mark World Oral Health Day 2026.
The programme, held under the theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” was spearheaded by a Public Health Nurse and Disability Inclusion Advocate, Ms. Gifty Akosua Adzigbe.
As a Mandela Washington Fellow, Ms. Akosua Adzigbe emphasised the importance of “shared community responsibility” in addressing the health needs of children and adolescents with disabilities.

Recognising the communication barriers that often prevent deaf learners from accessing health information, the outreach focused on visual and practical demonstrations of oral hygiene.
The session included detailed health talks and the distribution of free toothbrushes and toothpaste to encourage consistent daily care.
The initiative aimed to dismantle the systemic neglect often faced by children with disabilities during national health campaigns.
By bringing health awareness directly to the school, the organisers highlighted the necessity of tailored advocacy to ensure that every child, regardless of their sensory impairments, can enjoy the benefits of good oral health and a better quality of life.
