The Alpha Ladies, a benevolent Ghanaian club of young women, has extended a significant helping hand to mothers of children living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, donating relief items and financial support worth over GHC25,000.

The impactful gesture, made in Tema on Saturday, December 13, 2025, aims to alleviate the immense burdens faced by these families and empower mothers towards economic independence.

The comprehensive donation included a chest freezer, 200 bags of sachet water, a wheelchair, a walker, and a wide array of essential toiletries. These critical items, comprising detergents, diapers, wipes, toilet rolls, various soaps, and festive Christmas hampers, are specifically intended to address the constant need for hygiene products.

Children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus often suffer from incontinence, making diapers and related supplies an ongoing and significant financial strain on their caregivers.

Recognising that the demanding nature of caring for these children often prevents mothers from working, thereby crippling them economically, the Alpha Ladies went a step further. Based on specific requests, the club provided undisclosed amounts of money to five mothers to enable them to start their own businesses.

The beneficiaries included Diana Dunyoh, Naomi Narh, Emelia Okoso, Cecilia Etuaful, and Madam Beatrice Addico. Madam Addico, notably also received a chest freezer and 200 bags of sachet water to bolster her entrepreneurial efforts.

Speaking on behalf of the grateful beneficiaries, Cecilia Etuaful, visibly moved, expressed profound gratitude to the Alpha Ladies. “We thank Alpha Ladies profusely and ask for God’s blessings for them, and for Him to replenish their source,” she shared.

In a heartwarming gesture of reciprocity, Madam Beatrice Addico, a seamstress, presented aprons she had personally sewn to the Alpha Ladies, and a special dress she crafted for Rev. Mrs. Madjitey, as a token of her deep appreciation for their unwavering support.

The donation was facilitated through the Dorcas Margaret Foundation (DMF), a dedicated NGO that supports mothers of children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

Established in 2020 by the late Dorcas Margaret Madjitey, who herself lived with the condition, DMF mobilises, provides training, and offers crucial support to these mothers.

This significant contribution marks a pivotal moment for DMF, representing the first external support the foundation has received since its inception.

The Alpha Ladies first learned about DMF’s vital work and the challenges faced by these mothers after meeting the foundation’s Executive Manager at an event approximately a year ago, prompting their commitment to assist.

Rev. Dr. Mrs. Joyce Madjitey, Executive Manager of DMF, expressed overwhelming gratitude for the Alpha Ladies’ gesture. “These items will go a long way to alleviate the burden of our mothers,” she stated, highlighting the constant demand for financial support to acquire diapers and toiletries, as well as assistance for hospital visits due to frequent infections children with these conditions often contract.

Dr. Madjitey appealed to other benevolent organisations and individuals to come to the aid of the mothers. “Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus are very serious conditions and very difficult to manage. The mothers don’t have any help from anywhere, and that is making life difficult for them. We need all the help we can get to support these women,” she passionately pleaded.

Lady Josephine Haggan-Eshun, Founder and President of Alpha Ladies, reiterated that the donation was intended to ease the immense pressure on these mothers, having gained a deeper understanding of the challenges they confront in managing their children’s conditions.

She commended the club’s patrons, individual donors on social media, and members for their collective contributions towards the initiative.

Lady Haggan-Eshun joined Dr. Madjitey in calling on other organisations, institutions, and individuals with the capacity to help, to swiftly come to the aid of children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and their mothers through DMF.

Founded in 2022, the Alpha Ladies club is committed to undertaking and promoting initiatives that foster good communication and personal development, positively impact women and children, ensure goodwill and stronger friendships, and are fair and beneficial to all concerned.

Their latest act of generosity exemplifies their mission to make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable communities in Ghana.
