In a country where unemployment rates for persons with disabilities remain stubbornly high, a new initiative is challenging the status quo and paving the way for a more inclusive job market.

The Ghana Business and Disability Network (GBDN) recently hosted its inaugural “Career Connect” fair at the University of Ghana, bringing together jobseekers and entrepreneurs with disabilities to connect with potential employers and access crucial training.

The “Career Connect” fair, a collaborative effort of GBDN, Sightsavers Ghana, and the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, offered a unique platform for individuals with disabilities to showcase their skills and connect with potential employers.

The event funded by Standard Charted Foundation, focused on refining job search strategies of jobseekers and preparing them for interviews, while entrepreneurs received training on business development and improvement.

The day culminated in an interactive session where participants had the opportunity to showcase their talents and connect directly with potential employers from member companies.

The fair buzzed with energy as participants shared their experiences and hopes for the future. In an interview with DisabilityNewsGH.com, Mary Sewornu, a young entrepreneur with a physical disability, shared her excitement about the opportunity to connect with businesses and gain valuable training. “This event has given me the confidence and tools to take my business to the next level,” she shared.

Richard Narteh, a jobseeker with albinism, highlighted the importance of mentorship and guidance. “The workshop has equipped me with practical advice and strategies to navigate the job market,” he said.

“This network is a catalyst for both businesses and individuals with disabilities,” explained Mr. David Agyemang, the Ghana Country Representative of Sightsavers. “It provides a platform for companies to learn and share best practices for inclusivity, and for individuals with disabilities to access the training and support they need to succeed in the job market.”

The GBDN, established in March 2024, boasts a diverse membership, including Unilever Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank, Human Resource Certifications Centre, Telecel, and Nestle Ghana.

These leading companies, along with development partners – Sightsavers Ghana and the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, are committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable workforce in Ghana.

“Career Connect” represents a critical step toward addressing the significant challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Ghana, particularly high rates of unemployment and poverty. By connecting individuals with disabilities with potential employers and providing vital training, the network is empowering them to unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the Ghanaian economy.

This initiative highlights a growing recognition of the importance of disability inclusion in Ghana, a trend that is fostering a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
