The Disability Inclusion Advisory (DIA) team of the “WeCanWork” programme held a high-level strategic meeting with the Mastercard Foundation Ghana Country Office on January 20, 2026.
The meeting aimed to align disability inclusion implementation plans for 2026 and strengthen the existing partnership between the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) and the Mastercard Foundation.
A primary focus of the engagement was to brief the Mastercard Foundation’s newly appointed Inclusion Lead for Ghana on the progress made by the Disability Inclusion Unit under the “We Can Work” programme. The meeting also served as a platform for the DIA team to introduce its newest members to the Foundation’s country team, ensuring a seamless transition and robust collaboration for the year ahead.
The discussions centered on several key areas of the 2026 workplan, most notably the engagement of new Young Africa Works partners. Both teams explored practical strategies to weave disability inclusion into all programme activities, ensuring that young persons with disabilities have equitable access to the opportunities provided by the Foundation’s initiatives.
The DIA team shared critical reflections from previous implementation years, highlighting key successes and identifying persistent challenges. These insights provided a foundation for clarifying how both teams can provide mutual support to overcome barriers and improve programme delivery.
The strategic session concluded with several actionable agreements, including:
• Finalising Training Schedules: Both teams will provide feedback on proposed dates for upcoming disability inclusion trainings.
• Regular Engagement: The teams confirmed designated “engagement days” at the Mastercard Foundation office to ensure disability inclusion remains a priority in the Foundation’s ongoing operations in Ghana.
The GFD delegation was led by Senior Disability Inclusion Advisor, Rebecca Nunoo and Disability Inclusion Advisor Bismark Amo.
The “We Can Work” programme continues to be a flagship initiative for disability inclusion in Ghana, supported by a network of partners including Light for the World, the African Disability Forum (ADF), the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD), the Ghana Blind Union (GBU), and the Ghana Stammering Association (GSA).
Through this collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, the programme aims to set a gold standard for how institutional partnerships can drive meaningful change for persons with disabilities across Africa.
