As part of a broader strategy to build a formidable and visible sports organisation, the newly elected leadership of the Sports Wing of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) paid a courtesy call to the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) on Friday, January 23, 2026.
The visit to the NCPD Secretariat was the first in a series of planned engagements aimed at introducing the new executives to key stakeholders within the sports fraternity and forging strong partnerships for the future.
The Executive Secretary of the Council, Mr. Edwin Andoh, warmly welcomed the delegation, expressing his delight at the wing’s proactive approach.
Mr. Andoh outlined the Council’s vision for disability sports, placing heavy emphasis on a “Sports for Development” programme.
He charged the new leadership to prioritise organisational strength and professional branding. “To attract the needed partners and sponsors, the federations must be well-organised and present themselves as professional brands,” Mr. Andoh advised.
He also hinted at the Council’s willingness to organise a National Disability Sports Festival to unearth fresh talent across the country.
The President of the GSPD Sports Wing and legendary Paralympian, Raphael Nkegbe Botsyo, expressed the Wing’s readiness to collaborate with the NCPD to raise awareness on disability issues and utilise sports as a tool for job creation for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
President Botsyo made a passionate appeal for the Council to take a more active role in promoting sports recreation for PWDs.
A key highlight of his address was the proposal for the establishment of a National Sports Fund for PWDs. According to Botsyo, this fund would be instrumental in:
• Constructing disability-friendly recreational and rehabilitation centers in all districts.
• Purchasing specialised disability sports equipment.
• Organising sports activities nationwide to allow athletes to train locally.
“Building recreational centers at the district level will ensure that athletes do not have to travel long distances to train; we can unearth and nurture talent right at the doorstep of every PWD,” the President stated.
The GSPD Sports Wing leadership present at the meeting included:
• Mr. Raphael Nkegbe Botsyo – President
• Mr. Abo Samuel – Vice Chairman (Central Region)
• Miss Betty Gharbin – Secretary (Volta Region)
• Madam Fatima Moro – Financial Secretary (Greater Accra Region)
• Mr. Richard Amano Yeboah – Public Relations Officer (Eastern Region)
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to work together to ensure that disability sports in Ghana receives the investment and recognition it deserves.
