The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has launched the Sign Language Empowerment Programme, an initiative designed to improve the mental health and overall well-being of young deaf people in Ghana.
The programme, described as timely and innovative, particularly for deaf girls, aims to address issues such as bullying and create safer and more inclusive learning environments for deaf students.
The project is currently being implemented in five regions across Ghana: Eastern, Greater Accra, Upper East, Ahafo, and Central Regions.
It is supported by The Being Initiative, hosted at Grand Challenges Canada, with funding from the Government of Canada, Fondation Botnar, and the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care using UK aid through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
GNAD Vice President Christiana Yaghr emphasised the importance of the programme and called on more partners to help scale it up, ensuring that all deaf learners have access to inclusive and quality education. The programme also hopes to improve education, mental health for youth.
