Medical personnel at the Dawrampong Polyclinic are stepping into new roles as advocates for patient equity following a specialised training session held on February 19, 2026.

The programme, designed to transform healthcare delivery into a more disability-sensitive experience, saw nurses, midwives, and community volunteers commit to becoming “Disability Inclusive Health Care Ambassadors” within the Gomoa West District.

The initiative was spearheaded by Ms. Gifty Akosua Adzigbey, a public health nurse and the District Disability Focal Person, in collaboration with the NGO “Am Aware” (also known as KEBA).

Ms. Adzigbey, a Mandela Washington Fellow and advocate with the Geneva Learning Foundation, focused the training on dismantling the systemic hurdles that often prevent Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from accessing essential health education and sanitation services.

By equipping frontline providers with the specialised skills needed to navigate the unique challenges of the disability community, the programme aims to bring Gomoa West closer to the global goal of Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that no patient is left to suffer in silence.

A standout feature of the training was the use of immersive role-play scenarios that simulated the entire patient journey through a healthcare facility.

Participants navigated simulations that covered every critical touchpoint, from the initial contact at the Records department to consultations in the Outpatient Department (OPD), and into specialised units such as the laboratory, Antenatal Care (ANC), and Child Welfare Clinics (CWC).

These interactive sessions provided a practical platform for providers to refine their clinical and communication techniques, ensuring that PWDs receive inclusive care at every stage of their medical visit.

The feedback from the sessions was overwhelmingly positive, with staff identifying new ways to make their daily routines more accessible and welcoming.

The impact of this training is expected to reach far beyond the walls of the polyclinic. As newly minted ambassadors, the healthcare providers and volunteers have pledged to take the message of disability-inclusive care into the heart of the community.

Their outreach will target churches, schools, and community durbars, using these platforms to raise awareness and reduce the stigma that often surrounds disability in the health sector.

By moving the conversation into public spaces, the ambassadors hope to build a bridge of trust between healthcare institutions and the PWDs they serve.

The session concluded with a transparent plenary where participants shared personal experiences and discussed a roadmap for making inclusive health a district-wide standard.

This vision is strongly supported by the district’s top health leadership; Dr. Maxwell Yeboah-Kyere, the District Director of Health Service, has pledged his full support to the initiative, promising to ensure Gomoa West becomes a premier disability-friendly district within the Central Region.

Ms. Adzigbey highlighted that with this high-level administrative backing, the training at Dawrampong Polyclinic serves as the successful first phase of a broader rollout.

Plans are already in motion to replicate this capacity-building model in other zones, ensuring that the voice of the voiceless is reflected in the service delivery of every clinic and hospital throughout the district.
