A parliamentary dialogue organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in New Juaben North recently brought together candidates vying for the constituency seat to discuss their plans for the community. The event sparked a lively discussion about various issues, including disability inclusion and economic empowerment, but one particular proposal stood out.
Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, an award-winning international athlete and disability rights advocate, announced plans to offer rent-free accommodation to able-bodied individuals who marry persons with disabilities. This unique initiative, he said, aims to break down societal stigmas and encourage partnerships between individuals with and without disabilities.
“Persons with disabilities often struggle to find partners,” Yeboah stated. “In the past, families and friends discouraged able-bodied people from marrying individuals with disabilities due to stigma, but this must end. Marrying a person with a disability doesn’t mean your children will be disabled. I will provide rent-free accommodation to any able-bodied person who marries a disabled person, and I will help them find job opportunities so they can support their families.”
Yeboah believes that by alleviating the financial burden of housing, he can remove a significant barrier for couples where one partner has a disability. He hopes to encourage more individuals to embrace inclusive relationships, promoting a more equitable and accepting society.
In addition to this bold proposal, Yeboah also highlighted other key initiatives, including job creation for the youth and agricultural development.
Meanwhile, the NDC candidate for the constituency, Samuel Adongo, also promised other interventions, including using a portion of his MP’s salary to support persons living with disabilities.
The debate covered other critical issues, including road infrastructure, job creation, security, health, education, and agriculture.
