The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has successfully concluded a high-level, one-day intensive leadership course for over 80 government appointees and officials of the party’s Disability Desk.

The training, which drew participants from all sixteen regions of the country, was designed to equip appointees with the party’s core principles and leadership skills.

It also served as a strategic grooming ground for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) intending to contest leadership positions in the NDC’s upcoming constituency, regional, and national primaries.

The event, held on Saturday, February 7, at the Ghana Institute of Social Democracy (NDC Party School) in Accra, is being hailed as the first of its kind in Ghana’s political history.

Mr. Fredrick Assor, the National Coordinator of the NDC Disability Desk and Board Chairman of the National Council on Persons with Disability (NCPD), lauded the party hierarchy for the initiative.

He described the course as a “bold step” toward promoting inclusive leadership in Ghana.

“This training adds to the NDC’s record of ‘firsts,’ having been the first political party in the country to establish a dedicated Disability Desk,” Mr. Assor stated.

The curriculum was comprehensive, covering the history and identity of the NDC, party structures, rules and regulations, and the official hierarchy.

Participants also received practical training in fundraising, mobilisation, conflict resolution, and campaign planning and execution.

The participants expressed high levels of satisfaction, noting that the course provided vital exposure to the party’s values.

Madam Joyce Gyamfi, the National Women’s Organiser for Women with Disabilities, noted that the initiative makes PWDs feel truly integrated into the party’s fabric.

“This opens doors for us to get more involved in leadership and decision-making,” she said.

Another participant, Madam Christiana Nkrumah, described the initiative as a practical application of the “leaving no one behind” philosophy.

She urged the party to decentralise the training to the regional levels to ensure more PWDs benefit.

For Mr. Stephen Gyan, the Ashanti Regional Coordinator for the Disability Desk and immediate past Constituency Secretary of Asawase, the training was a deeply personal experience.

“This has rekindled my passion for the party,” he told DisabilityNewsGH.com. Mr. Gyan has been active in political leadership since 1992.

The Future of the Party School

The Rector of the NDC Party School, Dr. William Ahadzie, served as a facilitator and expressed his admiration for the enthusiasm shown by the participants.

He thanked the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) for sanctioning the course specifically for PWDs and hinted that more sessions are planned for the future.

Providing context on the school’s impact, Dr. Ahadzie revealed that nearly 25,000 people have been trained since its inauguration in 2017.

The school provides essential training on social democracy and political ideology for newly elected officers and party members.

In addition to ideological studies, the school offers courses in the political history of Ghana, election management, constitutional studies, and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Ahadzie disclosed ambitious plans to convert the school into a higher institution of learning that awards degrees, aimed at mainstreaming the ideology of Social Democracy in Ghana.

The session concluded with the awarding of certificates to all participants, marking a new chapter for disability representation in Ghanaian politics.
