As the world marks the International Day of the Deaf, the Osedze Health Centre in the Gomoa West District has received glowing commendations for providing exceptional, compassionate, and barrier-free medical care to a 16-year-old Deaf adolescent, Bernard Entsie.

The commendation was led by prominent public health nurse, disability inclusion advocate, and Mandela Washington Fellow, Miss Gifty Akosua Adzigbey, who highlighted the facility’s clinical professionalism during a critical health intervention.

According to the advocate, young Bernard had been unwell for two weeks, requiring admission and comprehensive medical management at the health centre.

Throughout his admission, the medical team—led by the Physician Assistant and supported by the nursing staff—ensured he received thorough clinical attention, including scheduled post-discharge reviews to guarantee his full recovery before returning to school.

The seamless care extended to Bernard has been hailed as clear evidence that recent capacity-building workshops and disability-inclusion training programmes conducted across health facilities in the Gomoa West District are yielding tangible results.

Historically, deaf patients frequently encounter severe communication hurdles and neglect in mainstream health facilities due to a lack of sign language proficiency among clinical staff.

However, the patient-centred approach demonstrated by Team Osedze stands as a benchmark for inclusive healthcare delivery.

“Your dedication has shone brightly in the care of Bernard Entsie,” Miss Adzigbey stated. “For the past two weeks, Bernard has been unwell. He was detained, carefully managed, and booked for several reviews to ensure he was fully well before resuming school. This compassionate follow-up reflects true commitment to quality care.”

The successful management of Bernard’s case reinforces the growing vision of Gomoa West positioning itself as a pioneer in equitable healthcare access.

Advocates have consistently championed the creation of an inclusive health ecosystem where persons with disabilities receive prompt medical attention without facing discrimination, communication gaps, or attitudinal barriers.

“Your efforts prove that the advocacy and capacity training on disability-inclusive healthcare are yielding real results,” Miss Adzigbey added. “This is the dream of Gomoa West—to become the first district providing disability-inclusive health and services. Well done, Team Osedze! Your work is a beacon of hope and inclusion.”

As health authorities continue to scale up inclusive training for medical personnel across various sub-districts, the exemplary dedication shown by Osedze Health Centre serves as a shining model for primary healthcare delivery nationwide.
