Prudential Bank has made an amount of Ghc10,000 to the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Blind Union.

The donation which was made on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, was a response to a request made by the Ashanti Regional branch for assistance to acquire assistive devices for its members, i.e. white canes and braille papers for blind students.

Prudential Bank has been supporting the Ghana Blind Union over the years. It has also employed one of the members as an Administrative Assistant at their head office.

The Executive Director of the Union, Dr. Peter Obeng-Asamoa, who received the cheque on behalf of the Regional Office, thanked the bank for its continuous support to the Union.

He called on other institutions and organizations to emulate the example of Prudential Bank to enable them to provide white canes for every member of the Union.

The white cane symbolizes the independence of the blind; the absence of which means that they would have to rely on others for almost everything they do.

Ideally, the Government of Ghana should be providing one for every blind person in the country, but that is not the case.

A white cane ranges from Ghc80 to Ghc100, making it difficult for many blind persons in the country to afford.

The Ghana Blind Union has a nation-wide membership of over 23,000, and less than 50% of that number has white canes. The donation by Prudential Bank, therefore, comes as a great relief to the Union.
