The Serwaa Amihere Foundation (SAF), an NGO founded by prominent Ghanaian television personality Serwaa Amihere, has pledged to provide economic support to seven single mothers and widows with disabilities.
The announcement was made by Alice Aryeetey, Executive Director of SAF, at the Accra Rehabilitation Centre on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. The foundation partnered with Voices of Women and Children with Disabilities in Ghana (VOWACGhana) to hold a breast cancer awareness and screening programme for women and young ladies with disabilities.
Madam Alice Aryeetey emphasised SAF’s commitment to empowering marginalised communities. “We aim to break the cycle of poverty and empower women with disabilities to take control of their lives,” she stated.
Recognising the unique challenges faced by women with disabilities, including access to healthcare, economic opportunities, and social support, the foundation will provide capital to the seven women to start businesses of their choice. The donation will be made in December as part of SAF’s annual Christmas programmes.
Beyond financial aid, Aryeetey highlighted SAF’s commitment to advocating for inclusivity and challenging societal norms that marginalise women and children with disabilities.
“We will continue to amplify the voices of marginalised communities, ensuring equal access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities,” she emphasised.
The Serwaa Amihere Foundation, established in 2019, is dedicated to supporting the less privileged in society, particularly women. The foundation’s notable initiatives include the Red Roses Christmas Charity, where widows and single mothers receive gifts, free screenings, national health insurance registration, business startup funds, and food items.
Over the past two years, the foundation has provided support to over 400 women. This latest initiative by SAF demonstrates a commitment to empowering women with disabilities and fostering a more inclusive society in Ghana. By providing both financial and social support, the foundation aims to break down barriers and create opportunities for these individuals to thrive.
