A disability advocacy organization, Simon Agbotsu Foundation For The Young Disabled (SAFFTYD), is gearing up for the 4th edition of its entertainment and fun games for persons with disabilities dubbed LOVE AND LAUGHTER and YES, I CAN GAMES.

On April 9, 2022, persons with disabilities from the 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies within the Greater Accra Region will be converging at the Accra Sports Stadium for the one-day event.

‘Love and Laughter’ offers participants a platform to interact with one another and network while being treated to music, food, and drink. And the “Yes, I can games”, on the other hand, is a mini Paralympics game that affords those with sports talents the opportunity to exhibit their skills. The idea is to unearth talents to feed the national Paralympics team, and also to take disabled beggars off the street.

The event has positively impacted the lives of persons with disabilities in the region over the years.

It usually happens in February; either before or after Valentine’s Day but this year’s will happen in April, due to a delay of funds.

SAFFTYD has so far also assisted some persons with disabilities with amputated limbs to have artificial ones, enrolled some youths with disabilities into university, and assisted others to learn trades; as well as distributed assistive devices, especially wheelchairs to persons with mobility challenges.

The organization was founded in 2018 by Mr. Felix Agbotsu, a former member of the British Army, who got paralyzed as a result of a road traffic accident; and named after his late father, Mr. Simon Agbotsu.

According to Mr. Felix Agbotsu, when he returned to Ghana, he noticed that most persons with disabilities in the country did not get the kind of love and support he enjoyed from his family as a person with a disability. And so he established the foundation to provide support for them.

About 90 to 95% of the organization’s programmes and activities are funded by Mr. Felix Agbotsu and his family. He is appealing to well-meaning individuals and institutions to come on board to help put smiles on the faces of persons with disabilities in the country.
