The Ghana Stammering Association (GSA) joined the global community today in commemorating International Stammering Awareness Day (ISAD) 2025, focusing on the theme: “A Diverse Stammering Community – Meeting Challenges with Strengths.”
This year’s theme is a call to action for individuals who stammer, their families, speech and language professionals, educators, and the broader society to recognise and embrace the diversity within the stammering community.
It encourages viewing stammering not only through the lens of challenge but also through the strength, connection, and growth it fosters.
While stammering is often associated with struggle, frustration, and misunderstanding, the GSA emphasises the profound opportunities these experiences create for cultivating resilience, empathy, and authentic communication.
Each person who stammers has a unique story shaped by both difficulties overcome and the courage, creativity, and community they build.
On this ISAD 2025, the GSA invites individuals who stammer to share their personal journeys, highlighting both the obstacles they have faced and the victories they have achieved.
A press release signed by Mr. Elias Apreko, Executive Director of the association encourages parents to reflect on their experiences, sharing insights on what has been effective, what has not, and the hope that has sustained them.
Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) are called upon to contribute their perspectives, sharing lessons learned from supporting clients through challenges and triumphs.
Furthermore, the GSA urges children and teenagers who stammer to boldly share their voices, expressing what they wish others understood and suggesting actions that could make the world kinder, more patient, and more inclusive.
For the GSA, ISAD transcends a single day, representing a continuous movement dedicated to awareness, acceptance, and action.
The association believes that by acknowledging both the challenges and strengths associated with stammering, society can be transformed to celebrate individuals who stammer for their humanity, rather than defining them solely by their speech.
The GSA calls on everyone to move forward with increased awareness, empathy, and confidence, harnessing the strength that resides within the diverse and powerful stammering community to overcome challenges.
