The Head of Public Relations at the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mrs. Naa Ayeley Ardefio Sekyere, has urged workers with disabilities not to hesitate to report abuses at their workplaces to the TUC.

She said it was wrong for workers with disabilities to be silent on abuses at work or to attempt to fight for justice all by themselves when the TUC could fight for them.

Mrs. Ayeley Ardefio Sekyere was responding to complaints by some persons with disabilities about abuses at their workplaces, during a workshop in Accra, on Thursday, April 30, 2022, on unemployment of persons with disability in the Ghana. The workshop was organized by Extra Helping Hand Foundation (EHHF) in partnership with Center for Employment of Persons with Disabilities (CEPD).

While some complained about unpaid salaries and allowances after being laid off, others also complained about verbal abuses and ill-treatments.

“TUC only hears about such abuses in the news but we expect that you will come to us”, she said.

Mrs. Ardefio Sekyere told the aggrieved disabled workers that they would hardly achieve any positive result if they decided to fight by themselves.

“If you are fighting that battle on your own, you will fight it forever and nobody will pay you attention, but then with the TUC behind you, you can get some result”, she said.

She further urged them to speak up for one another anytime they noticed any abuse; and called on the general public to do the same for abused disabled workers who might not know where and how to seek redress.

The chairman of the advocacy committee of Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), Alexander Williams added that they could also approach the federation with their cases for support.

He educated them on how to seek help in such situations and assured them of GFD’s willingness to provide them full support.
