In the wake of the Easter and Eid-ul-Fitr (Sallah) festivities, the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has issued a strong reminder to the nation: generosity must extend beyond food items to include the essential tools of dignity and movement.
In a powerful open letter addressed to national leaders and the general public, the National President of the GSPD, Mr. Courage Wormenor, highlighted a troubling trend where physically disabled individuals are consistently overlooked during seasons of giving.
While the distribution of rice, sugar, and poly tanks to various groups is a welcome gesture of kindness, Mr. Wormenor noted the total neglect of wheelchairs and mobility aids for those who need them most.
“In our churches, mosques, and communities, we coexist with individuals who have been forgotten, left to navigate life’s challenges without support,” Mr. Wormenor stated.
He argued that the physically disabled community deserves more than mere acknowledgement – they deserve empowerment and the means to participate fully in society.
The GSPD President drew on the moral foundations of the nation’s two major faiths to support his call for action.
He reminded the public that the teachings of Jesus emphasise uplifting the marginalised, while the Quran places a deep emphasis on compassion for the vulnerable.
Directing a sharp question to those in positions of power, including Members of Parliament (MPs), the Clergy, and Imams, the letter asked: “Where is the support for our disabled brothers and sisters?”
Mr. Wormenor also issued a heartfelt plea to families, urging them to reconnect with their loved ones with disabilities and become active advocates for their specific needs.
The GSPD is now calling for a fundamental shift in how the nation approaches social interventions – moving away from temporary charity and toward a long-term focus on inclusivity and accessibility.
“Let’s redirect our focus,” the statement urged. “The disabled deserve more than acknowledgement – they deserve empowerment. Let’s act now.”
