The Butterfly Ghana Foundation, in collaboration with the Anlo Special School, recently organised a seminar for parents and teachers of children with disabilities in the Keta Municipality. The event, supported by the Autism Awareness Care and Training Centre and Jonny and Friends 4 Autism, aimed to equip caregivers with the knowledge and skills to provide proper care for children with disabilities.
Mrs. Elorm Kuenyehia Duah, Director of the Autism Awareness Care and Training Centre in Accra, delivered a comprehensive presentation on various forms of disability, including physical, developmental, intellectual, and Down syndrome. She emphasised the importance of early detection and intervention, urging parents to be vigilant from infancy to identify potential disorders and seek timely care.
Mrs. Kuenyehia Duah also stressed the need for parents to avoid discrimination and provide equal care and attention to children with disabilities, just as they would for their siblings. Additionally, she encouraged parents to create a supportive environment that fosters inclusivity and acceptance.
Sheila Lomokie, a Special Needs Educator, challenged teachers to stay updated on best practices for teaching children with disabilities. She emphasised the need for ongoing research and professional development to ensure that educators are equipped to meet the unique needs of these students.
The seminar served as a crucial reminder of the importance of collaboration among parents, teachers, and caregivers in providing comprehensive support for children with disabilities. By working together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment that enables these children to reach their full potential.
