The Ghana Para Athletics team departed from Kotoka International Airport today, bound for Marrakech, Morocco, to compete in the World Para Athletics 2025 Marrakech Grand Prix.
This competition, scheduled from April 22nd to 29th at the Marrakech Sports Stadium, marks the team’s first official qualification event for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The four-member delegation is led by National Para Athletics Coach, Mr. Ibrahim Aminu Suleman.
The athletes representing Ghana are: • Zinabu Issah: A seasoned Paralympian and double gold medalist in the Women’s F57 Shot Put and Discus Throw at the WPA 2024 Marrakech Grand Prix.
• Edmund Govina: A competitor in the Men’s T31 Shot Put and Discus Throw categories, with experience at both the 2024 Marrakech and Paris Grand Prix events.
• Gilbert Ampiah: A promising high jumper from St. Augustine’s College, poised to make his international debut after undergoing classification in Morocco.
The team has undergone extensive training at the University of Ghana’s athletics warm-up field. They will continue their preparations in Marrakech to acclimatize and peak for the competition, which begins on April 26, 2025.
Mr. Ignatius Elletey, Executive Member of Ghana Para Athletics and representative of NPC Ghana President, Mr. Samson Deen, offered a rousing send-off at the airport, encouraging the athletes to perform at their best and make the nation proud in their quest for Commonwealth Games qualification.
Mr. Samson Deen, who also serves as President of the African Paralympic Committee, is expected to join the team in Marrakech along with members of the NPC Ghana Board before the event begins.
This qualification attempt represents a significant milestone for the athletes and underscores Ghana’s commitment to the development and international exposure of its para-athletes.
