On Monday, January 27, 2025, the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) organised a candlelight procession and vigil in Accra, bringing together staff members, representatives from disability organisations, partners, and well-wishers to celebrate his life and legacy.

Adam Abdul Wahab joined the GFD in 2015 and quickly became an indispensable member of the organisation. As a communications officer, he served as a vital link between the Federation and the media.

He also played a key role as the secretary to the Federation’s advocacy committee and as a disability and governance advisor, where he analyzed political manifestos with respect to disability matters and led the Federation’s engagement with political parties.

Wahab also spearheaded the drafting of a shadow report on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and served as the focal person for the CSOs platform.

Known for his expertise on health issues, education, employment, and the human rights of persons with disabilities, Wahab also served as the focal person on local and international legislations. He was particularly knowledgeable in the various articles of the UNCRPD, and was instrumental in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) reporting for Ghana.

Wahab passed away on January 20, 2025, at the age of 42, leaving behind two wives and eight children.

Mr. Peter Anomah-Kordieh, the programmes manager at GFD, in an interview with DisabilityNewsGH.com, noted that it would be exceedingly difficult to find a replacement for Wahab, given his diverse background and experience.

He explained that, in addition to Wahab’s educational qualifications, the Federation invested in building his capabilities over the years, through various platforms, and it would take considerable time to build another officer to the same level.

A moving tribute was also given by the Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism (GAPA), where Wahab was also a valued member.

Mr. Newton Kwamla Katseku, Executive Director of GAPA, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the association at the loss of Wahab, describing him as a colleague, friend, and an esteemed member.

GAPA’s tribute highlighted Wahab’s exceptional leadership, expertise, and passion in all spheres of association governance, most especially in the areas of advocacy, national and international policies, and human rights matters.

The tribute further emphasised his tireless efforts, dedication, commitment, and significant contributions to the association, noting his selflessness, generosity, and kindness.

The tribute concluded with words of deep respect and admiration for Wahab, a moving poem, and a final farewell.

The candlelight vigil served as a heart-wrenching reminder of Adam Abdul Wahab’s significant contributions to the disability community and his unwavering commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. His work and legacy will continue to inspire many in the years to come.
