Ghanaian para-athletes have made a significant impact at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting in Marrakech, with Zinabu Issah claiming a gold medal and breaking her own record, and Gilbert Ampiah securing a bronze medal.

Zinabu Issah of Ghana secured a gold medal in the Women’s F57 Discus Throw. Issah’s throw of 29.25 meters broke her personal best of 27 meters set in Paris 2024 and 26.6 meters at Marrakech 2024.

This achievement places Zinabu at the top of the World Para Athletics Women’s F57 Discus Throw rankings and secures her direct qualification for the WPA 2025 World Championship and the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Gilbert Ampiah, a 16-year-old high jumper from St. Augustine’s College, won a bronze medal in the High Jump T44 category. He achieved an impressive jump of 1.73 meters, marking his first international medal and a testament to his dedication and hard work.

Ampiah underwent official classification from April 21 to 23, an essential step for formal recognition within para-athletics competition standards. Gilbert’s previous achievements include: • 1.60m: Cleared at Ekumfi Atwa in 2023, triumphing over able-bodied athletes. • 1.82m: Set during St. Augustine’s inter-house competition. • 1.86m: Achieved at a recent competitive event, marking his current personal best before Marrakech.

Ampiah’s performance is not only a highlight of his incredible potential but also underscores Ghana’s growing presence in international para-athletics. The Marrakech competition serves as a qualifier for the upcoming Commonwealth and Paralympic Games, providing him with a broader platform to showcase his talent.

These accomplishments were reported by Henry Larbi, Secretary-General of the National Para-lympic Committee Ghana, highlighting the success of Ghanaian para-athletes on the international stage.
