The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has initiated community entry meetings in Mampong Akwapim, marking the official launch of the Sign Language Empowerment Programme in the area.

These meetings are a crucial step in formally introducing the project to key stakeholders, clarifying their roles and responsibilities, and fostering a sense of community ownership to ensure active participation.

As part of this initial phase, GNAD representatives met with the management of the Secondary Technical School for the Deaf in Mampong Akwapim. Participants included the school’s head, assistant head, teachers, and guidance and counseling coordinator, as well as GNAD staff members.

The Sign Language Empowerment Programme is designed to improve the mental health and well-being of young Deaf individuals aged 10-24. It is being implemented in five regions across Ghana: Eastern, Greater Accra, Upper East, Ahafo, and Central.

The project is supported by The Being Initiative, hosted at Grand Challenges Canada, with funding from the Government of Canada, Fondation Botnar, and the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care through UK aid, managed by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

The community entry meetings are intended to lay the foundation for a successful and sustainable programme that will positively impact the lives of young Deaf people in Mampong Akwapim and beyond.
