In an effort to bring formal banking services to the doorstep of the disability community, the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has partnered with Opportunity International Savings and Loans to equip over 120 members from across the Greater Accra Region with essential financial tools.
The programme, hosted in Ashaiman on Friday, February 21, 2026, drew a diverse group of 122 participants representing various districts.
By moving beyond traditional advocacy and focusing on direct economic intervention, the initiative sought to dismantle the barriers that often keep Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the “unbanked” sector of the economy.
Led by the GSPD National President, Mr. Courage Wormenor and the Public Relations Officer, Ella Korku
Ametor, the event served as a regional hub for financial independence.
Attendance was organised to ensure district-by-district representation, ensuring that the knowledge shared in Ashaiman would trickle down into every corner of the Greater Accra Region.
The partnership with Opportunity International was specifically designed to address the unique hurdles PWDs face when seeking credit or managing business capital.
The training sessions, delivered by expert bank officials, provided a deep dive into:
• Wealth Management: Navigating the principles of budgeting and disciplined savings.
• The Path to Credit: A transparent breakdown of loan acquisition and, crucially, responsible repayment procedures.
• Formal Inclusion: Assisting participants in transitioning from “cash-only” operations to the security of formal banking.
To ensure the programme yielded immediate results, Opportunity International facilitated on-site account opening for participants who previously operated without formal bank accounts.
This practical step was coupled with the initiation of loan application processes for several entrepreneurs in the group, many of whom are seeking to scale small businesses that serve as their primary source of livelihood.
The Public Relations Officer of the GSPD described the day’s outcomes as a victory for financial inclusion. By bridging the gap between a major financial institution and a marginalised community, the programme has provided over 120 individuals with a clearer path to economic self-reliance.
As these 122 participants return to their various districts, the GSPD and Opportunity International have set a new benchmark for how targeted, collaborative efforts can effectively drive the economic empowerment of persons with physical disabilities in Ghana.
