Ahead of the start of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) tomorrow, Mandela Fellow and Public Health Nurse, Ms. Gifty Akosua Adzigbey, took her “BECE Motivation Tour” to the Mepheboshet Training Centre to boost the confidence of eight resilient candidates with disabilities.
Ms. Adzigbey, a prominent disability inclusion advocate, visited the centre today, May 3, 2026, shortly after the students’ church service.
Her visit was aimed at providing psychological and emotional support to the four boys and four girls who are set to begin their national examinations on Monday.
The session began with the learners expressing the natural anxieties that come with major exams. When asked how they felt, several students admitted to being “afraid” and “nervous” about the journey ahead.
To counter these fears, Ms. Adzigbey led a powerful affirmation activity. The students, alongside their teachers and the advocate herself, wrote words of encouragement on stickers and pasted them onto manual cards.
The group then read the affirmations aloud, turning the quiet room into a space of collective strength.
The transformation was immediate. By the end of the session, the students’ language shifted from fear to boldness.
Instead of nervousness, they declared: “I am ready,” “I am bold,” “I am confident,” and “I can do it.”
The emotional weight of the moment was captured when one learner looked at Ms. Adzigbey and simply said, “I feel better.”

“That moment brought tears to my eyes,” Ms. Adzigbey shared. “It was a mixture of emotion and joy, knowing that a brief visit could make such a difference in their mindset. These learners have not given up, and by staying the course, they have already begun changing the world.”
Reminding the pupils of Nelson Mandela’s famous words—“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Ms. Adzigbey emphasised that while exams test knowledge, it is the resilience of learners with disabilities that shows their true strength.
The visit concluded with a spirited chant of the group’s new slogan: “We are capable, we will succeed!”
As the BECE begins tomorrow, the candidates at Mepheboshet Training Centre stand as a testament to the belief that with perseverance and the right support, disability is never an inability.
