Ms. Gifty Akosua Adzigbey, a Mandela Washington Fellow and dedicated public health nurse, made a surprise visit to the Salvation Army School for the Deaf in Swedru on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, to donate vital school supplies.

Her visit demonstrates a deep commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of their background or abilities, has the opportunity to access quality education.

The donation, which included 20 exercise books, 5 teacher notebooks, mathematical sets, packets of pens and pencils, erasers, sharpeners, and a school uniform, is specifically earmarked to support Christabel Takyi, a Deaf teenager currently in Basic 5.

Christabel’s academic journey is diligently managed by her single mother, a young woman in apprenticeship in Gomoa Dawrampong, who single-handedly shoulders the responsibility of her daughter’s education and well-being.

Ms. Adzigbey’s act of generosity aligns directly with the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which champions inclusive, quality, affordable, and equal education for all.

Her visit highlights the crucial role individuals and communities play in supporting children with disabilities to remain in school and thrive.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” Nelson Mandela once famously stated.

Ms. Adzigbey’s initiative embodies this philosophy, recognising that the provision of basic educational tools can be a potent catalyst for change in a child’s life.

“This donation serves as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility we hold in advocating for children with disabilities. By providing essential resources, we empower them to overcome barriers and reach their full potential”, Ms. Gifty said.

The message from this initiative is clear: “Deaf can do.” Supporting deaf education and promoting deaf inclusion are not just acts of charity, but investments in a future where every child has the chance to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society.
