Paradise Resort and Restaurant (Paradise Rest Stop), a popular eatery located at Nsutam Osino along the Accra-Kumasi highway, has received high commendation for its thoughtful initiatives aimed at supporting patrons with disabilities.

The establishment has taken significant steps to ensure accessibility and create a welcoming environment for all.

In addition to constructing ramps at its entrances for better accessibility, Paradise Rest Stop has implemented a policy that allows persons with disabilities to use their washroom facilities free of charge. This means individuals with disabilities are exempt from the standard Ghc2 fee for using either the urinal or toilet facility.

Madam Christiana Nkrumah, a regular patron with a physical disability, lauded the rest stop’s commitment.

In an interview with DisabilityNewsGH.com, she stated, “I commend the owners and management of Paradise Rest Stop for recognising that they have brothers and sisters with disabilities who need special attention, and they have made a conscious effort by giving them this incentive. It is refreshing to note that they recognise persons with disabilities and are willing to do the little they can to make life easy for them.”

She added, “Even though Ghc2 may not be too much for persons with disabilities to afford, this is a gesture that should not be glossed over. It is proof that the advocacy by civil society organisations and organisations of persons with disabilities is having an effect. People are gradually accepting and recognising disability rights, inclusion, and making reasonable accommodations for them.”

She also highlighted the significance of the ramps, stating, “Again, they have made the facility accessible by creating ramps at their various entrances. It is very thoughtful of them.”

While expressing her gratitude, Madam Christiana also appealed to Paradise Rest Stop to take their commitment even further.

“We are grateful to them for the initiative,” she said, “but I appeal to them to go further by employing a few persons with disabilities in their company.”

That, according to Madam Christiana Nkrumah, would be a feather in their cap and reflect full inclusion of persons with disabilities.

She further urged other organisations and companies that provide services to the public to follow Paradise Rest Stop’s example.

“I appeal to other companies providing services to the public to also empathise with persons with disabilities by making their facilities accessible and implementing other interventions that contribute to making life easy for PWDs. They can fall on organisations of persons with disabilities and civil society organisations for technical assistance,” she said.

Paradise Rest Stop’s actions serve as an encouraging example for businesses across Ghana, demonstrating how small changes can make a significant difference in the lives of persons with disabilities.
