The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is launching a new initiative to involve young persons with disabilities in backyard fish farming, according to the agency’s Chief Executive Officer, Malik Basintale.
The programme aims to train over 300 young persons with disabilities and provide each participant with 500 catfish fingerlings. It will also support the construction of fish ponds in their backyards or homes.
Mr. Basintale made the announcement on Thursday, May 29, 2025, in Santase, Kumasi, during the inauguration of a Fashion Training Hub for persons with disabilities under the “Make Fashion Inclusive” project. He indicated that the fish farming initiative will be officially launched this month, June 2025.
According to him, the catfish farming initiative is one of the government’s efforts to economically empower persons with disabilities.
“The agency is working hard to remove barriers and unlock your potential for economic freedom,” he said.
Since assuming office five months ago, the government has launched several interventions aimed at empowering persons with disabilities, especially the youth. These include the introduction of free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, free entrepreneurship training and support, free skills training, and now, catfish farming.
