Sightsavers and its partner organisations are celebrating a significant milestone: the successful training and transition of 127 young persons with disabilities into meaningful employment.
In addition, the Economic Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities (EEPD) project provided crucial support to 40 entrepreneurs with disabilities, helping them secure funding to boost their businesses.
This impressive achievement was realised through the EEPD project, a collaborative effort implemented by Sightsavers in collaboration with partner organisations including ABAK Foundation, the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), Challenges Ghana, Inclusion Ghana, and the Ghana Blind Union.
At a ceremony held in Accra on Monday, July 28, 2025, Sightsavers’ Ghana Country Representative, Mr. David Agyemang, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s outcomes and commended the dedication and hard work of the implementing partners.
The two-year pilot project was launched with the ambitious goal of addressing the persistent unemployment challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Ghana.
As part of the initiative, 399 unemployed disabled graduates seeking formal employment participated in comprehensive training programmes that covered a range of essential skills, including ICT literacy, CV writing, job interview preparation, and workplace etiquette.
These participants were also paired with mentors who shared their experiences and provided valuable guidance on how to succeed in their chosen fields.
Furthermore, 176 entrepreneurs with disabilities received specialised entrepreneurship training designed to help them scale up their businesses. The training covered key areas such as business and financial management, branding, and digital marketing.
The success of the EEPD project extended beyond direct training and support for individuals with disabilities. Sightsavers also celebrated the training of 96 employee mentors, 16 employers on disability confidence, formation of Ghana Business and Disability Network (GBDN) with 14 member Organisations.
The GBDN is now bringing together corporate entities and encouraging them to employ persons with disabilities. The network offers member companies a platform to share experiences and learn from one another about working with persons with disabilities, and access a pool of talented individuals with disabilities.
Sightsavers and GFD are also providing technical support, including conducting accessibility audits to ensure that buildings and operations are disability-friendly, as well as training management and staff.
The initiative also resulted in two learning exchanges by GBDN, 30 employers adopting more inclusive workplace practices, and conducting accessibility audits for 18 private formal institutions.
The entrepreneurship component of the project also resulted in growth experience by 96 entrepreneurs, 40 entrepreneurs supported to obtain funding, and training of 30 persons with disabilities with support to operate a poultry farm.
Additionally, the project influenced 2 policies, trained 56 religious leaders and organisations of persons with disabilities on disability inclusion, and 50 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies were trained on disability confidence tool kit.
Several participants who spoke with DisabilityNewsGH.com shared how the project had profoundly transformed their lives and expressed their sincere gratitude to Sightsavers and its partners for this invaluable opportunity.
The EEPD being a pilot project, Mr. David Agyemang noted that there is a possibility of scaling up the initiative, although that decision is yet to be taken.
