The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has launched a new five-year strategic plan aimed at promoting disability inclusion and empowering persons with disabilities in Ghana.
The plan was launched in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, and outlines GFD’s vision of “an inclusive society for all Persons with Disability in Ghana” and its mission to “advocate the rights of Persons with Disabilities by influencing policies, programmes and activities at the national and local levels and to strengthen the organisations of Persons with Disability”.
The strategic plan focuses on three main objectives: to embark on sustained, evidence-based, and result-oriented advocacy; to enhance the operational capacity of GFD by providing comprehensive support to its member Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs); and to strengthen the capacity of GFD and its member Organisations of Persons with Disabilities to develop and implement robust monitoring and evaluation systems.
GFD’s strategic directions include advocating for improved access to healthcare, education, social protection support, governance, and civic participation for persons with disabilities.
The organisation’s efforts aim to promote inclusive development and build strategic partnerships with organisations and institutions interested in disability issues. Some of the key thematic advocacy areas include:
– Re-enactment of the Disability Act: GFD aims to advocate for the re-enactment of the Disability Amendment Act to provide a stronger framework for protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.
– Access to Healthcare: The organisation will advocate for access to quality healthcare services and facilities, ensuring that persons with disabilities receive equitable treatment and support.
– Education: GFD will work to promote inclusive education, advocating for the inclusion of children and youth with disabilities in the education system and providing support for accessible learning environments.
– Employment: The organisation will advocate for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the formal and informal employment sectors, promoting equal opportunities and fair treatment.
– Accessibility: GFD will work to promote accessibility in public spaces, transportation, and communication, ensuring that persons with disabilities can participate fully in society.
The plan was developed through a consultative process involving GFD members, OPDs, and other stakeholders, and was supported by Ghana Somubi Dwumadie and UK Aid.
With this new strategic plan, GFD aims to strengthen its capacity and that of its member OPDs to promote disability inclusion and advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities in Ghana.
