Danaa, who currently manages a garden, believes that access to proper irrigation will enable him to expand his operations and create employment opportunities for other young people in his community.

Musah, in an exclusive interview with DisabilityNewsGH.com, explained that the lack of irrigation equipment has severely limited the scale of his farming. He currently works a 20-meter by 20-meter garden, and due to financial constraints, he has had to limit the variety of crops he is able to grow.

“I believe that having irrigation equipment will not only alleviate my challenges on the farm but also enable me to expand my operations,” Danaa stated. “This expansion could create jobs for other young people in the area.”

Musah Danaa is a 2023 graduate of the University of Education, Winneba, where he studied Special Education with History. After completing his national service, he was unable to find employment and decided to pursue vegetable farming.

Despite his limited resources, Danaa has managed to start a garden, cultivating crops such as kinef, okro, Jute Leaves (ayoyo) and a small amount of cabbage. His initial plan was to grow a wider variety of vegetables, including exotic green peppers, cabbage, carrots, and onions, but the lack of funds has hindered him.

He currently relies on manual labour, fetching water from a nearby dam with the help of his younger brother, using two gallons and a watering can to irrigate his crops. The dam is approximately 100 meters away from the garden, a task which Danaa described as “very tiring and time-consuming.”

Musah has also highlighted the challenges of the manual watering method, explaining that he sometimes falls down while carrying the water from the dam to the farm, and also spends long hours on the farm due to his slow pace of moving the water and the watering itself.

Danaa estimates that basic irrigation equipment would cost approximately GH¢10,000. He is appealing to individuals, organisations, and well-wishers to come forward and support his vision for a larger and more productive farm, which will not only transform his livelihood but also create opportunities for others.
