In a decisive shift from policy commitment to practical action, the Republic of Zambia has officially launched its National Action Plan (NAP) for the Protection of Persons with Albinism (2026–2030).
The landmark document, unveiled in Lusaka on 17 April 2026, represents a major national milestone in the quest for disability rights and social inclusion.
The launch was spearheaded by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, reflecting a powerful demonstration of national leadership in addressing the systemic challenges faced by the albinism community.
The development of the NAP was a collaborative effort involving the NAP Technical Committee, Liliane Fonds, the Cheshire Homes Society Zambia, and the Africa Albinism Network (AAN) through the “Out of the Shadows for Good” project.
This multi-stakeholder partnership ensures that the plan is grounded in both technical expertise and the lived experiences of persons with albinism.
This five-year roadmap marks a significant step in domesticating regional and continental human rights standards.
Specifically, the plan advances Zambia’s implementation of the 2024 SADC Declaration on the Protection of Persons with Albinism, the African Union Plan of Action on Albinism (2021–2031), and the African Disability Protocol.
Speaking during the launch, stakeholders emphasised that while the finalisation of the plan is a cause for celebration, the priority must now shift to rigorous implementation. The NAP (2026–2030) is expected to provide a comprehensive framework for tackling discrimination, improving access to healthcare – specifically sun protection and eye care – and ensuring the safety and security of persons with albinism across the country.
With the launch now complete, the Zambian government and its partners have issued a collective call to action: “Let’s act, together.”
The move signals Zambia’s readiness to lead by example in the Southern African region, ensuring that the rights and welfare of persons with albinism move from the shadows into the forefront of national development.
