Ms. Joyce Gyamfi, a prominent figure in disability advocacy and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Disability Desk, who is a person with a physical disability, has been appointed Assistant Senior Disaster Control Officer at the headquarters of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
This is a historic appointment, as she becomes not only the first person with a disability but also the first woman with a disability to hold such a position within the national disaster management body.
Ms. Gyamfi will serve in NADMO’s Gender and Social Welfare Department, bringing her unique perspective and expertise to an organisation crucial for national safety.
Her new role comes after a period of active political engagement and advocacy. Ms. Gyamfi previously served as the Deputy National NDC Disability Desk Officer and was the National Campaign Coordinator for Women with Disabilities during the 2024 elections, instrumental in mobilising support for the ruling party from the disability community.
Notably, Ms. Gyamfi had earlier voiced strong concerns about the “neglect” of persons with disabilities within President John Dramani Mahama’s government, despite the party’s campaign promises.
She had publicly expressed that, given the significant efforts of the disability desk in securing the party’s victory, many persons with disabilities should have been given prominent appointments in the government.
While expressing her gratitude for the opportunity, Ms. Gyamfi reiterated her call for broader representation.
In an interview with DisabilityNewsGH.com, she stated, “Having more of such appointments in all the sixteen regional and district offices would go a long way to appease the disability community which feels largely left out of the government,” extending her thanks to President Mahama, the Director General, and the Deputy Director General for Finance and Administration at NADMO.
Her appointment is seen by many as a positive step towards addressing long-standing calls for inclusive governance. However, Ms. Gyamfi’s continued advocacy signals that this is just the beginning of ensuring equitable opportunities for persons with disabilities across all levels of government and and within key national institutions.
