In a move to promote inclusive education, Ms. Gifty Akosua Adzigbey, a Mandela Washington Fellow and public health nurse, made a surprise visit to the Akropong DA Basic School on Wednesday, February 25, 2025.
Her visit was focused on providing essential learning materials to Ishmael Entsie, a Basic 7 student who is navigating his academic journey with physical challenges.
Ms. Adzigbey, who is a vocal advocate for ensuring that no child is left behind in health or education, donated a suite of basic school needs to Ishmael.
The items included 20 exercise books, 5 teacher notebooks, a mathematical set, packets of pens and pencils, erasers, and sharpeners.
These materials are intended to alleviate some of the barriers Ishmael faces in his studies and to encourage his continued participation in the classroom.
The gesture reflects the core objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which calls for inclusive, quality, affordable, and equal education for all.
Ms. Adzigbey noted that the responsibility to support children with disabilities is a shared one, requiring both individuals and communities to create environments where every learner can stay in school and thrive.
Referencing the words of Nelson Mandela – “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Ms. Adzigbey emphasised that empowering students like Ishmael is a direct investment in a more equitable future.
She called on the public to increase advocacy for children with disabilities, ensuring they receive the necessary resources to reach their full potential.
The visit to Akropong DA Basic School serves as a reminder that disability is not inability and that when inclusion is prioritised, every child has the opportunity to succeed.
By addressing the practical needs of students with physical challenges, Ms. Adzigbey continues to champion the belief that education must remain accessible to all.
